I know it can be challenging...
Neurodivergence can add layers of challenge to the already difficult job of parenting.
friction with your partner,
struggles to get your young person the suppoprt they need in education,
overwhelm with the demands placed on you and
isolation from other parents and perhaps your extended family?
These are really difficult feelings to have.
I know that because I felt them too, along with terrible guilt that I wasn't the parent I wanted to be
and such sadness that I was so disconnected from my son.

Hi, I'm Shelley...
My 16 year old son, Dan, is Autistic and ADHD. For years we struggled to find the right suppoprt for our family. My mental health suffered as did that of Dan and the rest of the family.
I did eventually find training that helped me to see that if I could make a difference for Dan, for myself and for my family.
When I better understood myself and Dan and focused on strengthening our connection through more positive and empowering communication, the challenges became simpler to navigate.
It was no magic wand but that connection has made a massive difference to all of us.
Would you like to create more calm and connection in your family?
In this course I share what I have learnt about creating this in my family and also supported other parents to do in theirs.
Our
Connexions for your Family workshops
are based on the 3 principles
of
understanding, communication and connection,
which encapsulate an approach to parenting that is
grounded in curiosity, values connection and
is commited to empowering
your ND young person.
CONNEXIONS FOR YOUR FAMILY
Online and in-person workshops to empower / enable parents, to strengthen connection in their family through understanding and communication.

THE WHY ...
I have created these parent/carer workshops from the knowledge and personal experience I have gained in the last 10 years.
I have drawn on what I have learnt in course facilitator training through Impact ADHD and Complex Strengths and The Neurodivere Universe, and on my training as an NVR-informed practitioner and a Drawing and Talking practitioner.
My years of working in education and with neurodivergent young people have also informed the content.
I am passionate about creating a community for you as a parent to feel that you can better understand your young person as an individual, are able to communicate with them in a positive and empowering way and build a strong connection with them.
I firmly believe that behaviour should be seen as an indication/ communication of what is going on in our young person's body and brain and how this is driving their actions. When we view it in this way, we can bring compassion and care to our young person and thereby respond to their needs rather than react to their behaviour.
I want you to feel empowered to take these ideas and principles and make them right for your family, to trust yourself and have confidence to support and advocate for your young person.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN...
You will gain a neurodivergence-positive understanding of your young person by becoming curious and being open to altering your own perspective.
You will gain confidence to develop empowering communication and collaboration with them too and will see the benefits of focusing first and foremost on building and maintaining that strong connection.
In order to do this, we begin by asking you to work on understanding yourself more clearly too and working out what gives you balance and calm.
We support you to empower yourself and grow confidence in your parenting skills through communication and connection with yourself.

HOW YOU CAN TAKE PART...
There are usually 6 workshops lasting 1.5 hours each but we do hold courses of different lengths on occassion.
These are held online in Zoom or in-person in community venues.
Our next in-person course in Ponteland will be 3 workshops, of 2 hours each, over 3 weeks.

WHEN YOU CAN JOIN US...
The next course of online workshops will begin in July. These will be held in-person at Ponteland Leisure Centre on Friday the 1st, 8th and 15th of July from12.45 to 2.45pm.
